Dr. Patrick G. Sullivan, owner of Nano-Mite Technologies LLC, in conjunction with the University of Kentucky Research Foundation has developed technology which
will solve the single most pressing health related issue facing the world today…obesity.
The financial, emotional, and social costs of the population being overweight or obese are staggering. It is estimated that 2 to 7% of the Medicaid and Medicare
budgets are the direct result of obesity. But this tells only part of the story. Many products have been developed to help combat the incredible weight gains. Without
a strict regiment of diet and exercise the use of these products has little affect. It has also been shown that without lifestyle changes the weight frequently
returns and many times to a higher level than prior to the diet/exercise program. It is estimated that the American population spends $53 billion a year on these
products that simply do not work.
Technology developed by Dr. Sullivan and Nano-Mite Technologies LLC is completely different than the traditional chemical based approach currently
used to address this issue. Instead we have turned to nano technology to seek a potential solution. Dr. Sullivan, who is employed by the University
of Kentucky Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center, has spent a significant amount of time studying brain injury and why it is frequently
devastating to the damaged area of the brain. This research has led Dr. Sullivan to the mitochondria. Each person's body is made up of cells.
The typical human body has billions of them. Although all cells are similar in their outward appearance when viewed under a microscope, they are
able to perform different functions based on the proteins that they produce internally.
All cells are somewhat autonomous units in that they need to be able to function as a microscopic unit. In order for the cell to do this each has within its
cell wall various organelles. These organelles are analogous to the organs in your body. Your heart has a specific function as does your, lungs, liver, kidneys etc.
Within each cell in your body is an organelle called mitochondria. In most ninth grade biology classes, students are familiarized with this organelle by learning
that it is "the powerhouse of the cell." Essentially mitochondria convert glucose (sugar) into energy. This process is explained in detail below but for the
purposes here suffice it to say that the mitochondria controls the rate of sugar burn and therefore a person's metabolism.
By altering the rate at which mitochondria burns glucose we can change a person's metabolism and force the mitochondria to burn glucose at a higher rate than normal.
